Summer Research Intern (Ottawa-based)

IFCL is currently recruiting for a Research Intern this summer.  Candidates should be a current MBA or Master's student or recent master level graduate.  For interested candidates, please read the eligibility criteria to ensure you meet requirements. Duration: the internship will be full-time for 16 weeks (4 months) between May to August 2023.

Location: While the internships will be 100% remote, our funding requires that the intern must be currently based or registered at an address in central Ottawa or in close proximity.

Research Intern

The role of the Research Intern will cut across IFCL’s core business lines including our Projects and Business Development units. The Research Intern will be interacting and working with team members in various roles and will develop a broad range of transferable skills in the process. The candidate will participate in our team's regular weekly group calls which include two weekly project calls and a broader team call to ensure they are well integrated into the organization and that they receive the needed support regarding any questions or concerns they may have. By the end of the term, the Research Intern will have gained in-depth exposure to project management tools and will have developed skills in strategic planning, teamwork, project management, operations, business development, and client relationship management, among others.

Responsibilities for the Research Intern include:

Projects Focused: Support specific projects, especially those related to climate finance/ESG, to assist development finance institutions in meeting their impact objectives. Tasks could include:


  • Conducting research and analysis
  • Developing key visuals and graphics as well as support on presentations 
  • Assisting the respective Project Manager with maintaining their internal project database accurately and up to date

Business Development: Help facilitate the development of proposals and all related business development activities. Tasks could include:

  • Conducting desktop research
  • Creating visuals and graphics
  • Writing, formatting, and refining submissions as requested
  • Assist in updating and managing the company’s online database and customer relationship management (CRM) systems

Other: Support the broader implementation of IFCL’s annual business planning, including enhancement of its internal communications strategy. Tasks would include:

  • Written and analytical input on reports, publications and articles
  • Developing presentations and graphics
  • Supporting other tasks utilizing critical communication and analytical skills
  • Assisting the implementation of an account planning system to manage key relationships including with key clients, new business opportunities, partners, etc.

Candidate requirements:

  • Current MBA/Master's student or master level graduate with an interest or background in international development, public policy, political science or other relevant degrees 
  • Minimum of two years professional experience in business, consulting, international development and other related fields
  • Strong communication, research, written and analytical skills 
  • Ability to develop and present written reports, research, presentations, etc. 
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or hold permanent residency in Canada
  • Must have a registered address in central Ottawa
