Professor Andreas Klasen is a practice oriented and research driven senior advisor and academic with a strong background, extensive knowledge and an outstanding track record in trade, innovation and economic development. He advises multilateral development banks, innovation funds, development finance institutions, export credit agencies and governments on benchmarking, policy formulation, strategy, institutional design and programme set-up, as well as management of public sector programmes. He has long lasting experience in WTO disputes.
Prepared a market study and business plan as part of a technical assistance project of the World Bank Group for economic development
Provided a benchmark analysis for EKF Denmark’s Export Credit Agency focusing on government export finance instruments
Advised ITFC, Islamic Development Bank Group, preparing the new 10 year strategy, and facilitated the implementation of innovation and design thinking approaches for ITFC
Supported the institutional design and programme set-up of government innovation and technology funds in Europe and the Middle East
Advised Botswana Development Corporation on export promotion and economic diversification
Developed a new guarantee programme for the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) including strategy, policies, and operational guidelines
Assessed development, infrastructure, innovation and export promotion instruments of G7 countries for the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC)
Reviewed the development impact assessment framework of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) focusing on outcome and impact
Supported the Canadian government on its legislative review for Export Development Canada (EDC) reviewing EDC’s mandate, strategy, operations and global environment
Provided economic analyses of the new foreign direct investment legislation for the Diwan of the Royal Court of Oman
Supported the government of Armenia with regard to export and innovation-led industrial development in a technical assistance project of the Asian Development Bank
Provided financial and economic analyses in WTO disputes
Delivered executive education as well as training on economic promotion focusing on strategic management, innovation and design thinking for the UAE’s new export credit agency ECI
Was the Managing Director of the official German Export Credit and Investment Guarantee Agency on behalf and for account of the German Federal Government
Served as the Vice President of the Berne Union, and was the Chairman of the World Bank / Berne Union Working Group
Dr Andreas Klasen is full Professor of International Business and Head of the Institute for Trade and Innovation (IfTI) at Offenburg University (Germany), Visiting Professor at Northumbria University (UK) and Senior Honorary Fellow at Durham University (UK). His research focuses on innovation, trade and economic development. He is also a Member of the National Committee of ICC Germany, and a Member of the Global Policy Advisory Board.
Until 2015, he was Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Germany and PwC’s Economics & Policy leader, serving as Managing Director of the official German export credit and investment guarantee agency. Before joining PwC, he was Head of Guarantees and Export Finance with EADS (Airbus Group). Until 2014, Professor Klasen served as the Vice President of the Berne Union. Education
